The Iglesia de la Piedad is a Catholic Church, located on Bartolome Mitre and Parana. Its just a couple of blocks away from the National Congress Building. Contruction lasted thirty years and it was finally completed in the year 1895. It has a Neoclassic style, with two lateral towers and six columns making up its arcade. In the interior its main attraction is the painted dome.
The actual size of the church is something that can´t be appreciated from the outside. It was built on a very narrow road and anyone looking upon it will lose perspective of its size. This can only really be appreciated from the inside.

The "Ateneo Grand Splendid" bookstore, located on Avenida Santa Fe, just a couple of metres off the intersection with Callao street, was opened in 1919. Contruction began 2 years earlier in 1917. When it opened originally it did so as a theater. It was built on the remains of the Teatro Nacional Norte. In 1923 a radio station was establishe din the building: Radio Splendid.
It only became a bookstore in the year 2000. Its charm is given by the fact that it maintained its original structure. The dome and its paintings were maintained, the original balconies are still in place and even the original red velvet curtain is in its place. Where once there was a stage, there is now a cafeteria were one can enjoy a drink whilst diving into any of the books from the store.
The dome painting on the roof was painted in 1919 and represents a celebration of the end of World War One.
An article in the British tabloid "The Guardian", ranked the store as the second most beautiful bookstore in the world.

The Buenos Aires Ecological Reserve (Reserva Ecológica Costanera Sur) is located on the east side of the Peurto Madero area. It limits on its eastern side with the Rio de la Plata. It covers 353 hectares, and almost all of its extension is from land that was gained from the river. All of the debris from the expansion of the city, specially the construction of highways in the 60's and 70's was laid here. The original idea was to expand the city on this new terrain. This never occurred and the area was abandoned by man, but not by nature. The elements crept slowly in and made this place what it is. Over 250 different species of birds have been seen here, alongside 9 species of amphibians, 23 species of reptiles, 10 species of mammals and over 50 species of butterflies. All of this diversity can be found here, literally metres away from some of the busiest areas in the city of Buenos Aires.

It took me around two hours to walk my way from one side of it to the other, but there are some alternative circuits which are way shorter and quicker than this. I went early in the morning and I found myself around a lot of people running, on their bicycles. Its an ideal place to forget about the chaos of the city of Buenos Aires for a while, without having to set a foot out of it.

Its a real pity, though, that this area is surrounded by an industrial complex (as shown in one of the photographs taken below). This not only constitutes "visual pollution", but also reflects the delicate situation and the difficulties of maintaining a balance between nature and man.

Casa Rosada

The House of Government in Argentina is best known as the "Casa Rosada", which literally means the "Pink House". It is the venue of the Executive power and the presidential office. Located on Balcarce street in front of the Plaza de Mayo and surrounded by the Ministry of Economy on one side and the venue of the Banco de la Nación on the other. After years of neglect it took on a central role in 1862, when President Mitre established his government and his office in the building. The subsequent administration under President Domingo Faustino Sarmiento gave it its peculiar characteristic: the pink paint on its walls. The building as it can be seen today was rebuilt in the year 1873. It lays on the site where the  "Real Fortaleza de San Juan Baltasar de Austria" known also as the  "Castillo de San Miguel", used to stand (this goes back to one of the founding fathers of the city of Buenos Aires, Don Juan de Garay).

On Saturdays, Sunday and National Holidays the venue can be visited. There are guided tours that take around one hour and allow visitors to explore most of the offices and rooms, including the presidential office. This is a highly recommendable visit.
